Damon Wilkinson, owner of Professional Forestry Services, LLC in Mobile, said that its important to him that when clients hire his firm, hes the forester on their land doing the work. Being a one-man office comes with challenges, but he likes the flexibility to accept clients ranging in size from Regions Bank to an individual with five acres.
I dont ever tell anybody theyre too small, he said. As a full-service, professional forestry firm, Wilkinson specializes in all phases of reforestation. He handles all types of site prep, supervises planting and crews, and even post-planting activities like fertilization. Although Wilkinson began his consultancy in 2008, he said that the foundational skills he learned over the years as an employee at Gulf Lumber in Mobile still help him and benefit his clients. In particular, he recalls memorizing log scaling charts and grading enough lumber to be able to scale standing timber at a glance with reasonably high accuracy.
He said, When I'm looking at a clients timber or taking timber inventory on their property, I can visualize what the boards coming from their trees are going to look like. Although Gulf Lumber is now Canfor, Wilkinson still contracts with the company to oversee their Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Certification for their three Alabama mills.
